How to Adjust Black & Decker Routers

When you get the hang of it, Black & Decker routers are easy and enjoyable to use. Router bits are available in many different profiles, and because routers are adjustable, slight variations in router bit cut depth can make a huge difference. Also, plunge routers provide another important feature: safety. Because the router bit is enclosed inside the router, the bit is not exposed until the operator is ready to use it. By the way, the plunge depth is adjustable, too. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the router from the wall outlet. If you have been using the router before unplugging it, allow the blade to stop spinning. Router bits can spin up to 27,000 rotations per minute (rpm), so it may take a minute or two for the bit to come to a complete stop.

    • 2

Loosen the locking screw and pull the plunge lock lever open to allow the plunge feature to slide freely.

    • 3

Push the router down so the router bit touches the piece of wood you will be working on. Then push the plunge lock lever down.

    • 4

Move the depth pointer to the "0" (zero) position. This is the starting position. Add the depth of cut you want to the starting position.

    • 5

Slide the depth stop bar to the desired position and tighten the locking screw to hold it in place. If you need to fine-tune the depth measurement, use the adjusting knob.

    • 6

Pull the plunge lock lever up and let the router go back to its original position. Turn the router on and plunge the router downward to make the cut.
