How Do I Get a Certified Copy of My Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, Divorce Decree? thumbnail
Divorce records are handled by county courts in Georgia.

Since 1952, the state of Georgia has kept centralized marriage and divorce records, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state doesn't give out certified copies of the records; requests for copies are forwarded by the state agency to the Clerk of the Superior Court in the county that handled the divorce proceedings. Certified copies of a divorce decree may be necessary for insurance, court or business transactions.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Clerk of the Superior and State Courts in the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse at 325 E. Washington Street, Suite 450, in Athens, Georgia, if you live in the area. Address an envelope to the office if you do not live nearby or are unable to visit the courthouse. Contact the Court at 706-613-3189 for driving directions.

    • 2

Prepare money order, certified check or credit-card payment to the Clerk of the Superior and State Courts. Make the payment for $2 (as of 2011) to pay for the documentation, plus 50 cents for each page of the decree. Call the office if you are unsure how many pages are in your divorce decree.

    • 3

Attach a letter to your payment explaining that you are requesting a certified copy of your divorce decree. Include your full name, your former spouse's name, the dates and locations of your marriage and divorce, your Social Security number and your former spouse's Social Security number. Sign the letter in ink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call the Court before you visit to make sure the office will be open.

  • Athens-Clarke County does not accept personal checks. Business checks, money orders, Visa and MasterCard are valid forms of payment.
