Consult with the mother-to-be before preparing her baby shower.

There is evidence that celebrating the birth of a baby goes all the way back to the time of the Egyptian and Roman empires. However, the modern version of the baby shower emerged after World War II in the midst of the Baby Boom. Traditionally, these celebrations were attended only by women, but today's baby showers are often attended by all family members and close friends--both male and female. If you are in charge of throwing a baby shower, like any party, if you start planning early and use some common sense, you'll increase the chances of having a successful, memorable celebration. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Consult with the mother-to-be. It is important to ask her what date would be appropriate for the baby shower and who she would like to invite. Together, you can create the guest list and collaborate on other aspects of the affair.

    • 2

Choose a venue. Some common places to have a baby shower are a house, a banquet hall and a restaurant. If you decide to have it at a restaurant or a banquet hall, you should call them at least a few weeks ahead of time and make a reservation.

    • 3

Send out invitations. You can send them through the mail or e-mail. Make sure that you include the basic who, what, where, when and RSVP instructions on the invitations. Send the invitations at least a few weeks before the baby shower, so the guests can work it into their schedules.

Plan the menu. A banquet hall and a restaurant will most likely provide the food and often have party packages that will offer several menu options. If you plan to have the baby shower in your home, you'll need to decide if you want to use a catering company or cook the food yourself. If you choose the latter, ask a friend or relative of the mother-to-be to help out.

Plan some activities. An idea for a fun game is to create a quiz in which guests try to match celebrities to their babies' names.
