How to Remove Asphalt Mastic From the Carpet
Asphalt mastic is a tarry, black substance, commonly used to seal shingles, metal flashing and other materials used in weatherproofing a home. Very sticky stuff, asphalt mastic can easily be accidentally tracked into your home and stain your carpet. Not your typical stain, asphalt mastic can quickly leave a permanent yellowing discoloration in a carpet if left too long. For this type of stain, immediate action is essential to remove the mastic before permanent damage is done. Citrus solvent is a non-volatile oil that you can use to dissolve asphalt mastic. Carefully clean up as much of the loose asphalt mastic as possible with a clean cloth. Pinch the carpet with the mastic on it through the towel and draw the carpet fibers through. Use a new clean spot in the towel each time.

Wet another clean towel with citrus solvent. Dab the remaining asphalt mastic in the carpet with the solvent.

Blot the carpet, as the citrus solvent dissolves the asphalt mastic, using a clean section of towel every few blots to draw the dissolved mastic and citrus solvent from the carpet.

Dab the stained area with citrus solvent and blot the stain repeatedly until the carpet is completely clean.

Wash the spot where the stain was with soap and water to remove any mastic residue and dirt. Allow the area to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings
Do not wipe an asphalt mastic stain on a carpet, as this will only spread the mastic.
Do not pour citrus solvent directly onto the carpet, as this can dissolve the glue that holds the layers of the carpet base together and de-laminate the carpet.
