Instructions

    • 1

Cut about one quarter off the bottom of a round cake, after it is completely cool.

    • 2

Cut the piece you cut off down the middle, so that you have two triangular-shaped pieces.

    • 3

Place the larger piece onto a cake platter with the flat side down. Put one of the other pieces, also flat side down, on either side of the larger piece. Line up the flat edges of the pieces.

    • 4

Determine how much frosting you will need to cover the cake. Set aside the rest. Mix black food coloring into the white frosting for the cake. Frost the entire cake in the black icing. Use extra frosting to fill in any gaps between the center and the sides of the hat, so that it looks like a seamless shape.

    • 5

Dye half of the set-aside white frosting with red food coloring and place it into a pastry bag. Pipe a red border around the edge of the cake.

    • 6

Put the rest of the white frosting into a pastry bag and pipe a skull and crossbones onto the hat.

    • 7

Stick a feather into the brim of the hat for an extra bit of decoration.
