Use silk ties to dye your Easter eggs.

Dying Easter eggs is a fun activity, especially if you have children. Unfortunately, there are only so many patterns you can make with the store-bought Easter egg dye. If you are looking for something new to do to your Easter eggs this year, consider coloring them with silk ties. The designs you can create are only limited by how many different silk ties you can find.

Instructions

    • 1

Hunt for some silk ties that have a unique pattern. Don't use your Dad's favorite tie to do this. Thrift stores and yard sales are great places to find cheap silk ties to use for your Easter egg craft.

    • 2

Cut the silk tie so that you have only what you need to wrap the pattern around the egg. Wrap the egg with the pattern facing the egg shell.

    • 3

Wrap a piece of cheesecloth around the silk tie and tie in place with a two separate pieces of yarn. It is best if you tie the egg from front to back, and then side to side. It should resemble a present.

    • 4

Lay the eggs in a large pot and cover with water. Add 3 tbsp. of vinegar to the water.

    • 5

Place the pot on the stove and set the heat to high. Bring to a boil and then lower the temperature so that the eggs simmer for 20 minutes.

    • 6

Remove the pot from the heat and drain out the water. Wait for the eggs to completely cool before unwrapping them and revealing the transferred pattern.

Tips & Warnings

  • Normally, eggs are hard boiled before they are dyed. This craft requires the eggs to be raw when you wrap them in your silk tie.

  • Brush vegetable oil over each Easter egg after removing the silk if you want them to shine.

  • You can use an old pillow case or sheet in place of the cheesecloth.

  • The tag on the tie must read 100 percent silk.
