How to Add Costume Skins to the Sims

In "The Sims" games, you take an omnipotent role as you watch characters you create grow, work, play, date and enjoy themselves. You can dress your characters in different styles, and you can find websites on which fans post new costumes and skins. Some of these are costumes based on characters from TV shows, and others are simply for fun. Whatever kind of skins you want to add, you can do it without any special tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Internet Explorer." Navigate to a skins website such as Sim Slice or The Sim Resource (see Resources links). Download a Sims skin file or costume you want to install. Save the file to your desktop.

    • 2

Double-click the downloaded file. If it's a ZIP, RAR, or SIT file, click the option to extract it into a new folder.

    • 3

Look for a "Read me" file included with the skin file. Each file you download may be different, so consult those instructions first. If there is no "Read me" file, then look at the type of Sims costume file.

    • 4

Find and open the "Skins" folder located in the "Sims" directory. The default directory is "C:/Program Files/The Sims/GameData/Skins." Copy and paste the path into Windows Explorer if necessary.

    • 5

Right-click the "Skins" folder, or highlight all the contents in the folder, and click "Copy." Right-click on your desktop, and click "New," "Folder." Name it "Sims Backup." Right-click inside the folder and click "Paste" to transfer the file into that folder. If you make a mistake or break something, you can replace the files with the original folder.

    • 6

Drag and drop the skins file, usually a BMP or "Image Bitmap" file, into the appropriate Skins folder. If the file name of your skin begins with a "C," it's a head file; if the letter "B," it's a body; "H" means hand. The file name may also be a "U" or "S," meaning swimsuit; "N" is for nude (or censored), and "F" is for formal.

    • 7

Open "The Sims." Your new skins appear in the game under the character editor.
