Check pockets prior to washing items and remove objects such as tissue or paper. These dissolve into small pieces during the washing process, creating an excess of lint that cannot be lifted off your laundry by the washing cycle.

    • 2

Sort clothes well prior to washing. Certain items, such as towels and other "soft" linens, tend to create lint. Others, like corduroy, Velcro or synthetic fabrics tend to attract lint. This may cause lint to remain on your laundry because the washer has a hard time removing lint from these materials.

    • 3

Reduce the overall load size. If the wash load is very large, crowded laundry cannot agitate freely enough to rinse the lint off during the wash and rinse cycles.

    • 4

Open the lid on the washing machine. Gently pull up on the center of the agitator in the washing machine and remove the filter on units with a center agitator. For front-loading washers, the lint screen is commonly located inside the washer door near the top. Pull out the filter and rinse it in cold water. Remove any excess dirt or debris with a sponge. Return the filter to the washing machine.
