How to Paint a Wall With a White-Washed Look
Whitewashing is a technique you can use to give a room in your home a fresh, airy look. It differs from simply painting a wall white in that white-washing involves applying a thin layer of white paint mixed with glue. In this manner, the base color of the wall or object shows through. White washing allows you to drastically brighten an item, without completely stripping it of color. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Combine 1/4 all purpose cleanser with warm water in a bucket. Dunk a sponge in the bucket, mixing the cleanser and water. Wring out the sponge and rub it against the surface of the wall, removing built up dirt and oil. Allow the wall to dry completely.

2
Sand the walls with coarse sandpaper. Don't sand them too much as you'll remove the base coat of paint completely; just run the sandpaper over the entire surface area very lightly to roughen the surface you'll be painting slightly so that it better absorbs the whitewash.

Dip a nylon paintbrush into whitewash mixture and run the brush from the top of the wall downward. Re-dip your brush into the mixture as needed. Continue in this manner until you have covered the entire wall in a thin layer of whitewash. Don't conceal the base color of the wall completely, but streak over it with the whitewash mixture. How lightly or heavily you decide to do this depends on personal preference.
