How to Replace a Differential Seal in a 1962 Chevrolet
The rear end on a 1962 Chevrolet has a differential in the middle of the axle. This differential has a cover plate that allows for access to the differential assembly itself, and that cover has a seal between it and the axle housing to ensure there are no leaks. If a leak does develop in the differential cover, then the differential cover needs to come off so the seal can be replaced with a new one. This should take under an hour to do.
Things You'll Need
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Drain pan
- 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
- Gear oil
- Replacement differential seal
- Gasket scraper

1
Slide the jack underneath the axle and lift up the jack so the axle comes off the ground. Put jack stands under the axle to support the car, positioned high enough that you can crawl under the vehicle to access the differential. Lower the jack and slide it out from under the Chevrolet.

2
Put a drain pan underneath the differential. Remove the differential cover using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the cover back with your hands and let the differential fluid empty into the pan.

3
Scrape off the gasket material left over on the axle housing and the inside of the differential cover using the gasket scraper. Install the replacement gasket on the differential cover with your hands, then install the bolts on the differential cover with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

4
Open the drain plug on the forward section of the differential. Fill the axle housing with the gear oil until the oil reaches the bottom of the drain plug hole. Reinstall the drain plug with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

5
Lift the jack up to the axle and then remove the jack stands under the axle housing. Lower the Chevrolet down with the jack.
