Clean the soap scum off your shower walls.

Soap scum looks innocent enough -- a thin, filmy layer of white on your shower doors and walls. That thin layer of material can be stubborn to clean, however. Soap scum is a mixture of soap molecules and minerals from your water that bonds with the fat from your body. It's the fat that makes soap scum somewhat difficult to clean, according to the Professor's House website. To effectively clean old soap scum from your shower and walls, you will need a cleaner that dissolves fat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull on some rubber gloves to protect your hands.

    • 2

Fill a spray bottle with distilled white vinegar and liberally coat your shower walls with the vinegar. You can also use a mixture of ammonia and water. Use 2 parts water for 1 part ammonia. Both of these will dissolve the soap scum.

    • 3

Leave the vinegar or ammonia solution on the soap scum for five minutes. Open the windows and turn on the fan in your bathroom during this time. Both of these options have a strong smell.

    • 4

Wipe the walls and doors clean with a rag or sponge. Turn on the shower and rinse the remaining residue off the walls and shower doors.

Tips & Warnings

  • A paste made from water and baking soda works well on stubborn spots. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub the area with a stiff brush.
