How to Make Your Own Easy Duvet Cover
Making a cover for your duvet or comforter is an excellent way to add years to its life. You can wash the cover instead of washing the duvet, keeping the feathers or other duvet filling fluffy and soft. Probably the least expensive way to make a duvet cover is to use flat bed sheets the same size as the duvet. The sheets are actually larger than the duvet, so you can easily cut out the two sides of the cover from two sheets. These instructions are for a queen-size comforter that's 92 inches square. You can easily modify the directions to make other duvet cover sizes. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 queen-size flat sheets
- Iron and ironing board
- Tape measure
- Fabric marker
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- 2 cotton strip of snaps, each 69 inches long

1
Iron the sheets to remove creases, which interfere with accurate measuring and cutting.
-
2
Lay a sheet out on the floor or a large work surface and mark a rectangle 93 inches wide and 95 inches long with a fabric marker. Avoid the hems of the sheet when you are marking the rectangle. Cut out the rectangle. Repeat with the second sheet.

3
Fold over a shorter side of one rectangle 1 inch. The fabric should be folded so that you can see a 1-inch strip of the right side of the sheet along the edge of the wrong side of the sheet. The right side of the sheet is the one you will see when the duvet cover is on the bed. Press. Fold the sheet over once more along this edge. Press. Pin the hem using straight pins. Sew the hem using a sewing machine. Repeat to make a hem along one short side of the other rectangle you have cut.

4
Turn one piece of fabric so the right side is facing up. Pin one 69-inch-long strip of snaps along the hem you have just made. The strip should be centered on the short edge of the fabric, so that you have about 12 inches of fabric on either side of the strip. Do the same thing with another strip of snaps along the hem of the other piece of fabric. Make sure the two tapes are aligned so that the snaps will fit together.
-
5
Sew the strips of snaps to the pieces of fabric using a sewing machine with a zipper foot. The zipper foot will allow you to sew along the tape without bumping into the snaps.
-
6
Put the two pieces of fabric together so the right sides are facing, and the two edges with the snaps are aligned. Pin along the edge on either side of the strip of snaps. Then pin the other three unfinished sides of the cover together.
-
7
Sew through all layers from the outside edge of the fabric to the start of the strip of snaps on both sides. When you reach the strip of snaps, make a right-angle corner and sew to the outside edge. Sew along the other three sides of the cover, making your seam 5/8 inch from the raw edges. Turn the duvet cover right side out.
