Start in the first world. This level introduces players to the basic skills needed to play the game. Here players learn the basic controls for jumping, attacking enemies and using power boosters. You can make the mushrooms grow, make the red flowers shoot fireballs, and use the blue shell to turn Mario into a shell for killing enemies. At the first castle, either shoot Bowser with fireballs until he dies, or hit the switch behind him by running underneath him when he jumps high.

2
Complete world two. World two is the desert world, where fire power comes in handy. This world is filled with segmented cactus creatures called Pokeys, quicksand and Lakitus creatures that shoot spiny shells out of clouds. In the castle at the end of the world, Mario faces a large Pokey. When it is low to the ground, jump on its head three times to defeat the Pokey.

Navigate through the water-themed third world. Mario's fireballs help kill his undersea enemies. While not every section of this world takes place under water, Mario often has to dodge flying, over-sized fish. The boss fight on world three is against a large flying fish; whenever it jumps above the bridge, bounce on the fish's head to defeat it.

4
Defeat the jungle world four, which features giant spiders and rides on the back of a creature that's a cross between Yoshi and the Loch Ness Monster. World four also includes time-release blocks that fall from under Mario. These turn red before they fall, so watch out for them. In the castle at the end of world four, beat the giant Goomba to move on. Use Mario's ground pound move on the Goomba's head. Activate the platforms to get high enough for a ground pound, which consists of jumping, and hitting the jump button again while in the air.

5
Look for snowballs and falling snow in world five, the ice world. In this world, Mario slides on the ice and can get caught in snow drifts similar to world two's quicksand. Enemies in this world include creatures that throw snowballs at Mario. In the castle, Mario must defeat a large Piranha Plant, which flails and smashes into the ground, attempting to squash him. Jump on it three times while it's on the ground.
-
6
Dodge bullets to complete world six. Bullets can also be deactivated by jumping on them. This world features a lot of levels similar to other worlds, but with new challenges to increase the difficulty. The boss fight in this world is with a mole in a tank. Jump on the mole's head when it emerges from the tank.

7
Explore the seventh world, which sits in the clouds. In the seventh world, all the difficult aspects of the previous levels come together, so mastering the earlier levels helps players defeat world seven. Mario has to dodge bullets, ride large caterpillars and keep his balance in the clouds. The boss at the end of this world is Lightning Lakitu, who throws bolts of lightning and spinys at Mario. Use fireballs to kill him, or jump on his head as he swoops down between attacks.

8
Maneuver through a landscape of fire and bullets in the spooky level eight. This world features the ghosts from the haunted houses, Jack-O-Lanterns and giant spiders. The castle at the end of this level holds the final boss fight against Bowser and Bowser Jr. Bowser Jr. can be defeated by kicking the shells he throws back at him. As in the first level, get past Bowser and hit the switch at the end of the bridge to drop him in lava and beat the game.
