Choose your flowers. Chrysanthemums also are used at funerals as well as gladioli, roses and carnations. In certain cultures white chrysanthemums symbolize death and grief or truth. Gladioli are thought to symbolize strength of character, sincerity and moral integrity. Red carnations mean admiration, pink stands for remembrance and white stand for love and innocence. Roses symbolize respect, love and courage.

Place your bowls where you want them to be sitting during the funeral. Fill your vase or bowl with water, but not up to the very top. Allow a few of inches of space between the water level and the top of the container.

Cut your flowers with about 4 inches of stem coming from the bud. If the bud of your flower is wide enough to balance upright and float in the bowl on its own, you may trim the stem a bit more and lay it in the water of your vase or bowl. For a slimmer bud, such as a rose, use the florist's wire to tie together three or four roses and place the arrangement in your vase or bowl. Place as many (different) buds in your water as you choose.
