How to Make A King Headboard
Headboards can radically change the overall look and feel of a person's bedroom. Upholstered and other textile headboard designs can be pricey in a retail market, but they are not difficult to make. Novice crafters can create a headboard customized to suit the wall space behind any size of mattress using inexpensive, lightweight materials and fabric to coordinate with the existing décor. Making a king-sized headboard uses the most material, but the technique is the same for any size of mattress. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Arrange three of the 20-inch by 30-inch foam core boards side by side in a horizontal row on a flat surface. The 30-inch long edges should be touching to create the 90-inch width of your king-sized headboard. This dimension is slightly larger than the 76-inch wide standard king-sized mattress. The extra 14 inches will create a 7-inch design strip on each side of the bed.

2
Tape the foam boards together where the seams meet using strips of duct tape. Flip the boards over and tape the seams on the front side.

3
Repeat the first two steps with the remaining three boards. You will have two, 90-inch-long by 20-inch-tall strips for the king-sized headboard. Join the strips together on both sides of the 90-inch-long seam with duct tape. The overall dimension of the headboard is now 90 inches long by 40 inches tall.

Cut a 94-inch-long by 44-inch-wide section of batting. Spread the batting open on a flat surface. Center the foam board on top of the batting. Fold each side of the batting over the 3/16-inch edge of the foam board and tape it to the back.

5
Cut a 95-inch-long by 45-inch-wide section of fabric. Spread the fabric face down on a flat surface. Center the batting-covered foam board on the fabric. Fold the sides of the fabric onto the back of the board and tape them in place using duct tape.

Attach three sets of self-adhesive, removable, interlocking strips to the back of each foam board section that makes up the king-sized headboard. Remove the protective paper backing and press the headboard in place on the wall behind the bed.

Tips & Warnings
Cut curves along the edges of the foam board before upholstering to create alternative designs for the headboard. Mark the cut lines and use a utility knife to make the cuts.
