Make your own miniature boat with a Styrofoam bowl.

Making models is a way for kids to explore how things work. Many different types of models in kits for making cars, airplanes, buildings and boats are sold at craft and hobby stores. You do not need to purchase kits to make the models, though, and you can make an eco-friendly project out of the activity. Styrofoam bowls are perfect for making miniature boats and the finished products will float on water like real boats.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a small chunk out of a block of Styrofoam with a serrated kitchen knife. Cut it into a cube about 1 inch thick.

    • 2

Apply a dot of glue onto the inside bottom of the Styrofoam bowl. Press the cube in place over the glue.

    • 3

Insert a craft stick into the Styrofoam cube at the center of the bowl, so it sticks straight up. Allow the glue to dry for about 20 minutes. This will hold a sail for the boat.

    • 4

Cut a sheet of construction paper into a triangular sail with scissors. Decorate the sail with markers. Color a patchwork design, an image, or a skull and crossbones for a pirate-style ship.

    • 5

Apply glue to one side of the craft stick and press the edge of the paper sail in place over it. Allow the glue to dry for about 10 minutes.
