Save up those plastic bags and reuse them in an eco-friendly craft.

If your pantry has become crowded with all the plastic grocery bags you've saved, maybe it's time to find an old craft for a new crafting medium. Use your plastic bags in place of yarn to make a traditional and whimsical craft--the pom pom. Plastic pom poms can help you cheer on your favorite team or adorn the tops of gifts all holiday season. String them together to make pom pom garland for your favorite little girl's bedroom or for your Christmas tree.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out a plastic grocery bag flat on your table. Cut off the handles and the bottom fold, so the bag becomes one big plastic tube.

    • 2

Cut the length of the bag in strips approximately 1/2-inch wide.

    • 3

Find a piece of leftover corrugated cardboard, such as from a packing box. Cut the cardboard to 1 inch wide by 4 inches long for a small pom pom; for a larger pom pom, the width of the cardboard determine the pom pom size, so cut it larger accordingly.

    • 4

Wrap the strips of plastic bag around the width of the cardboard scrap. As one plastic strip runs out of length, pick up a new one and overlap them slightly as you continue to wrap.

    • 5

Take a length of ribbon 6 inches long. Thread one end through the loops of plastic so the ribbon lies between the plastic and the cardboard on one side. Tie the ribbon to secure all the loops within the knot.

    • 6

On the side of the cardboard directly opposite the ribbon, cut the plastic strips off the cardboard. Make one single cut across the width of the cardboard to do this; the plastic ends will spring into pom pom shape around the knot in the ribbon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie your plastic pom pom onto a gift as it is, trim the ribbon shorter and tie it onto a stick to wave it around, or tie it onto a larger string to make a garland with several other pom poms.
