Instructions

    • 1

Choose a room in which to exercise. You don't need a lot of space; a small office or spare bedroom will give you enough room to work out.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the room with a tape measure. You need to know exactly how much space you have to work with, especially if the room is on the small side.

    • 3

Go to an exercise-equipment store, being sure to take the workout-room measurements with you. Choose the type of equipment that you want. Measure the length and width of the equipment to decide which pieces will fit in your room. Leave enough space around the equipment to be able to move about the room freely.

Make sure you buy a flat bench, because it can be used for a large number of exercises. A set of dumbbells with a storage rack is also a smart buy if you are cramped for space. Dumbbells take up much less space than barbells, and allow you to do the same exercises. You might want to buy a treadmill or elliptical machine so you can do cardio exercises inside when the weather is bad.

Buy some carpet or foam padding to put on the floor in your workout room. Even if your workout room is already carpeted, you should place sections of additional carpet beneath your exercise equipment. Moving the equipment can scratch your floor or tear your carpet, so it is a good idea to have a buffer. Carpet or foam will also protect your floor if you accidentally drop a weight on it.

Make your workout room inviting. Paint the walls bright colors, or hang inspirational posters on the walls. You want to make your workout room a place in which you like to spend time. Install a radio or even a TV to help keep you motivated while you work out.

Add items to your workout room. If you have a TV in the room, buy some aerobics or other workout DVDs to help keep you motivated. Other inexpensive items to consider are stability balls, a yoga mat, jump ropes and resistance bands. Aside from being inexpensive, these items take up very little room and can be stored in a corner or in a closet in the room.
