How to Find the Brand of an MP4 Player

MP4 files (recognized by their .mp4 extensions) are multimedia format files that can store audio, video and subtitle data. MP4 players are portable multimedia devices that can play these media .mp4 files -- the brand of the portable player should be displayed on the outer cover of the device.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the MP4 player so that its front is facing toward you. Look across the front of the device and check to see if the brand's name or logo is displayed there. Companies such as Sony and Philips print their brand name above the device's display screen. Other companies, such as Archos, print their logo below it.

    • 2

Flip the device over so that the rear panel of the player is facing toward you. Scan the back of the device for a company logo or name. Brands such as Coby display their brand name at the top of the back of the device. The rear of the MP4 player should be fairly plain and any brand name will be visible.

    • 3

Turn the MP4 player on. Press the power button and wait for the welcome screen to load; most good MP4 players should have an animated welcome screen that might display the company name.

    • 4

Find the brand name on the packaging of the device if it was sold to you in the box. All companies will display their brand name in large or colorful letters on the front or rear of the packaging.

    • 5

Ask the retailer who sold you the device if you still cannot find the brand of the MP4 player. The store's sales assistant will be able to inform you of the product manufacturer.

Tips & Warnings

  • MP4 files are most commonly used by iTunes and the PlayStation Portable (PSP).

  • Avoid purchasing an MP4 player without an obvious or well-known brand name. Counterfeit devices are quite often sold on online auction sites and those without any obvious product name could be a fake. Trust your instincts -- if a device seems suspicious, it probably is.
