My Xbox Will Not Turn on

The Xbox is a video game system made by Microsoft. Among its many features is Xbox Live, a service that allows users to compete online with other players around the world. In November 2010, CNET named the Xbox one of the five best video game consoles, rating it four out of five stars. If you are experiencing a problem powering on your Xbox, there are many steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Verify that the Xbox is receiving power by checking the connection between the console and the power outlet.

  • Try connecting the system to a different power outlet.

  • Confirm that the Xbox is connected to your TV with the appropriate AV or HDMI cable.

  • Select the correct video input on the TV. Press the "Source" or "Input" button on the set's remote control until the game system content appears on the screen.

  • Try turning on the console using all three possible ways. Press the console button, the eject button and the Xbox Guide button -- the round one in the center of the controller -- to determine if a specific button is faulty.

  • Check that the console's power button glows solid green. A flashing red light indicates that the console is too hot and cannot be used until it cools. A solid red light accompanies on-screen instructions; follow them to solve the problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Xbox has recently been exposed to a temperature difference of 20 degrees Fahrenheit or more, allow it to come to room temperature before using it.
  • If the power button glows solid red and no instructions appear on the screen, contact Xbox support.
  • Any attempt to open, service or take apart the Xbox console poses a risk of electric shock, fire or damage to the console.
