If you just took possession of a vehicle with a sunroof and do not know how to adjust it, follow a basic formula to operate and adjust the window. A sunroof retracts into a housing in between the ceiling of the vehicle's interior and the roof of the automobile. Some sunroof openings include a tilt adjustment where the roof glass tilts up to allow air circulation without retracting. While each auto maker places the controls for the sunroof in different locations, they all operate on the same basic principle.

Step 1

Sit in the driver's seat of the car. Look up to the dome light near the front of the ceiling. Locate the push switches, dials or levers with a sunroof icon or lettering. If not on the ceiling near the dome light, look to the left-hand side of the steering wheel or near the heat and air conditioning controls.

Step 2

Turn the car ignition key to the neutral position. Press the pressure lever, dial or switch and experiment with the settings. Learn the switch that retracts the roof window and the setting to close the window, but tilt the sunroof so it allows air flow.

Step 3

Press the switch and allow the window to begin to retract but release pressure halfway through the retraction. Begin adjusting the sunroof window to your desired setting.

Step 4

Press the switch to tilt the sunroof at an angle and stop half way through the tilt to adjust to a custom level of opening.
