Learn how to read the Urdu texts. Even though you will deal with simple scripts, being able to read the words is a must. You will be redirected to some simple lessons, teaching you from the Urdu alphabet to everyday greetings and wishes. Read Urdu children's books. By the time you have learned how to read the words, even if you don't know what they mean, you can start reading children's books in Urdu, with the help of a dictionary. Such books can be found on sale at World Language, but there is also a selection of kids' books on Urdupoint. The latter are for more mature children and should be left for a later stage of your Urdu language self-education.
