How to Roast Pinecones

How to Roast Pinecones thumbnail
Pine cones make an attractive addition to your holiday decor.

Pine cones can be used for simple decor, especially during the holidays. You can break off their curved edges for use in a countless variety of crafts such as picture frames, or you can group them together in arrangements with candles and other embellishments. You can paint pine cones, dip them in wax, make ornaments out of them and even eat their seeds. Roasting pine cones for crafts takes very little effort and helps release the pine tar, making them neater to handle.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the pine cones in hot water and dish soap.

    • 2

Place the pine cones on a cookie sheet. Line the sheet with aluminum foil to catch the sticky pine tar. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Roast the pine cones in the oven for 45 minutes. Check if the pine cones have opened and released pine tar. If you see no change, leave them in the oven 10 more minutes, but no longer to avoid burning them.
