How to Make a Truck Costume

If your child loves fire trucks, make him an affordable fire truck costume for Halloween.

Store-bought costumes can be expensive, especially considering that they will probably only be worn by a child once on Halloween. If you have a young one that love trucks, you can make them an affordable truck costume for Halloween or anytime of year. The child can also help you design and construct the costume for a fun craft project for the entire family. With a box, some paper plates and a few items from the sewing or craft store, you can have a creative truck costume for your child in no time.

Things You'll Need

• Medium-sized cardboard box
• Water-based paints
• Paintbrushes
• Box cutter
• 2 yards wide black ribbon
• Scissors
• 4 paper plates
• Stapler

Instructions

1. Remove the top and bottom flaps on your medium-size box with a box cutter. Discard the flaps. You now have a four-sided box with an open top and bottom.

2. Cut the 2 yards of ribbon in half. You will have two pieces of ribbon, each of them 1 yard in length. These will be the straps that will hold the box truck around your child.

3. Attach the ribbon to the front and back of your box using a stapler. Take your first piece of the ribbon and position it inside the shorter side of the box on the left-hand side. The edge of the ribbon will be 1-inch from the top. Staple it in place. Stretch the ribbon across the length of the box and staple it on the opposite, left-hand side, 1 inch from the top. Repeat this process with the second piece of ribbon on the right-hand side. You now have two straps that will rest on the shoulders of your child and hold the box/truck in place around his waist.

4. Take your four paper plates and staple them at the lower four corners of your box. These will be the wheels of your truck.

5. Apply the paints to your box and wheels with the paint brushes. If you are making a fire truck, use red, black and white paints. If you are making a construction truck, use yellow, black and white paints. Be creative and have fun with your paint job. You now have a finished truck costume.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are making a construction truck, have your child wear a construction hat so they will look like they are driving the truck you made.

• Do not let a young child handle the sharp box cutter. Always have adult supervision when making your truck costume.
