How to Load a Sample in FTIR

FTIR spectroscopy stands for Fourier Transformation Infrared spectroscopy. A sample is run through the machine and a full spectrum is produced. It is then possible to determine the compound being sampled based on the resulting spectra. Unlike other forms of spectroscopy, FTIR requires little to no sample preparation. Simply load the sample into the machine. Sample loading will vary slightly depending on the machine and chosen FTIR analysis. Ensure that the loading method matches the chosen FTIR operating mode.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "advanced data collection" icon on the desktop computer that contains the FTIR software. This software controls the entire FTIR.

    • 2

Vent the sample compartment before you load a sample. This venting can be achieved by either selecting the vent sample compartment button found under the basic tab or you can flip the 'release switch" that is located by the flow meter. The release switch will purge the sample compartment with nitrogen.

    • 3

Remove the lid from the sample compartment. Insert the sample vial with the sample.

    • 4

Replace the lid to the sample container if the FTIR is being run in "vacuum" mode. However most FTIR does not require a vacuum and the lid will not need to be replaced on the sample compartment. The majority of FTIR sampling is done in "purge" mode.
