How to Get a Fitness Monitor Certification
A fitness monitor works at a fitness facility, such as a gym or a health club, to supervise the use of equipment, address health and safety issues, and assist clients and guests. A fitness monitor may also be required to demonstrate and maintain equipment and organize activities. In order to become a personal fitness monitor, a candidate must have good communication skills, an enthusiasm for fitness and experience using fitness equipment. A candidate must also obtain certain certifications from the American Red Cross to prepare for the job.

Determine the certifications you need. Many fitness monitor jobs require you to be certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid. Some also require you to obtain AED certification, so you are able to use an Automated External Defibrillator. If you know for what organization you will work, ask what qualifications they require. If you do not yet know where you will work, you should get all three certifications.

Locate your local chapter of the American Red Cross. You can do this by checking your local phone directory or by using the American Red Cross website to locate the facility nearest to you.

Determine how you would like to take your classes. The American Red Cross offers on-line courses in which you can learn all the material on-line at your own pace, then participate in a two hour skills check at your local Red Cross center. You can also take classes at your local Red Cross center or, if workshops are hosted by your employer or at your local fitness organization, you may be able to attend classes there.

Take courses in the format of your choice. Training usually takes between 4 and 7 hours to complete. Once you complete the training, you are certified. Obtain proof of your certification to show to your employer. If you loose or do not receive your certification card, contact the American Red Cross for a replacement.
