Why Can't I Play the Games I Download to My XBox 360 Hard Drive?

If you can't play a game from the 360's hard drive, check the disc tray.

The Xbox 360 employs a feature that allows games to be downloaded to and played directly from the device's hard drive. Certain caveats exist to make this possible, preventing widespread piracy and unauthorized sharing. Downloading a game to a hard drive decreases loading times, saves wear and tear on the disc drive, and makes the 360 console run cooler. If you find you can't play the game from the drive, there is a simple solution.

Things You'll Need

• Xbox 360
• Xbox 360 game controller
• Compatible Xbox game disc

Instructions

1. Turn on the Xbox 360 console. Press the DVD drive "Open" button from the front panel.

2. Insert the game disc for the title that refuses to play from the hard drive. Close the tray.

3. Allow the console to verify the title. Select the game from the "My Games" menu from the 360 Dashboard, by scrolling to it with the joystick. Press the "A" button to play.

Tips & Warnings

• The Xbox disc must be inserted into the tray for the console to verify ownership of the title. The game will not play from the hard drive reliably otherwise.

• Do not shift the console to its vertical position with a game disc spinning inside. Damage to the disc is likely.
