How to Make a Betty Costume From "The Flintstones"

Betty Rubble -- wife of Barney, mother of Bamm-Bamm and best friend and neighbor of Fred and Wilma Flintstone -- is an American cartoon icon. Though she's arguably the least fleshed-out of the main characters from the long-running popular show, Betty is nonetheless a popular costume choice. Go it alone or take a partner dressed as Barney, dress your child as Bamm-Bamm or organize a group to dress up as the whole Flintstone gang for your next costume party.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the top of your armpit to your knees. Cut a piece of light blue faux fur fabric to this length.

    • 2

Measure around the largest part off your body. Cut the fabric to this width, plus about 4 inches.

    • 3

Cut the bottom edge of the faux fur into jagged points.

    • 4

Wrap the fabric around your body from front to back. Have someone pin it together up the back for you, overlapping it well so there won't be any gaps. Make the costume snug at the waist.

    • 5

Pin the middle of a wide black ribbon to top center of your costume, below the chin, with a simple white brooch. Pull the two ends of the ribbon over your shoulders and have your costume design assistant pin the ends to the inside of the fabric in the back. Officially, Betty's black ribbon went around her neck, but pinning it to the back of the costume will help hold it up.

    • 6

Remove the costume. If you have to remove any pins to get it off, have your assistant mark where they were with a fabric marker.

    • 7

Replace each pin by sewing a fastener in its place. This includes the pins holding the ribbons in the back of the costume.

    • 8

Cut a strip of fabric about 1 inch wide and long enough to go around your waist and be tied in a bow. Put the costume back on and tie this strip around your waist in a bow in the back. If you used faux fur for the costume, find regular fabric for the belt that matches the faux fur color as closely as possible.

    • 9

Place a matching light blue hair bow high on the back of your head.

    • 10

Wear flip flops or even go barefoot, if that's suitable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear a tube top and shorts under your costume for security in case it slips.

  • If you can't find the right broach you can make one. Craft stores carry empty broach fittings and a variety of stones and shells that will work perfectly for this costume.
