Instructions for Making a Magic Wand From Willow & Gemstones

Instructions for Making a Magic Wand From Willow & Gemstones thumbnail
Choose a straight or crooked willow stem for your wand.

Magic wands have been used by many cultures since proto-Indo-European times, according to the Esoterica Archives website. Today, they are often used by practitioners of Wicca and witchcraft as a tool to direct personal power. Magical correspondences of willow include the Moon, the planet Venus and the element of water. This makes a willow wand particularly useful for love and lunar magic. Because a magic wand is a personal tool of empowerment, there are no strict rules for the size and shape of the object; however, many practitioners suggest that the best length for a wand is the same measurement as the space between the crook of your arm and your longest finger.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a willow branch that has already fallen from the tree. Avoid cutting a live branch because it could cause damage to the tree. After you have found a stem in the size and shape that appeals to you, dig a shallow hole at the base of the tree and leave a small gift as a token of your gratitude. A silver coin, some sacred herbs, a crystal or small personal object make appropriate gifts.

    • 2

Cleanse the branch with a spiritual ceremony. A spiritual cleansing removes the energy of any other people or creatures that have come in contact with your wand. Pass the wand through the smoke of a cleansing herb such as sage or rosemary.

    • 3

Wipe down the branch with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris. You may strip the bark from the stem, sand it and smooth off any rough areas, or leave it in a natural state if you prefer. The important thing is that you spend time touching and working with the wand to infuse it with your personal energy.

    • 4

Bore a small hole in the thin end of the branch, using the point of sharp blade. Insert a gemstone or crystal into the hole. It should be a snug fit, with the bulk of the gemstone protruding from the hole, so bore only a small hole and gradually make it larger until the gemstone fits securely. Repeat the process if you want to insert more than one gemstone into your wand.

    • 5

Place a dab of wood glue into the hole and position the gemstone. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth.

    • 6

Charge your magic willow wand by placing it on your sacred altar or let it lay outside in the moonlight during the three-day full Moon phase.

Tips & Warnings

  • Quartz crystals are embedded in the end of magic wands because they are thought to amplify energy and enhance clear thinking. Amethyst is also used because it is believed to protect the user and increase spiritual consciousness. If your wand is intended for performing lunar magic, consider embellishing it with a moonstone, or use a rose quartz crystal if it is intended mainly for performing love magic.
