How to Build Your Own Players in a Basketball Video Game
Certain basketball video games allow you to create your own player. Much like the rest of the players in the game the new player will have strengths and weaknesses which will come into play during the game. Aside from the skill set that the created basketball players has, these games often let you design their physical appearance. Your imagination can run wild as you create a player from the ground up. Some games even let you design your own custom team.

Determine the physical characteristics of the basketball player. Body size, body type, eye color, hair color and ethnicity are some of the choices you can make when designing your own basketball player for your video game. These choices are all personal preference.

Choose the uniform color. If you are creating a whole team from scratch then you will be able to choose items such as the team colors, emblem and maybe even the mascot. If you are creating a player for a team which is already in existence, then the player will automatically adopt those colors and designs.

Choose a position for the player. Some of the base skills a player might have will correspond with their position. For instance a shooting guard might have inferior ball handling skills to the point guard. Or the power forward might be inferior in terms of rebounding to the center.

Choose and adjust different skill sets for the video game basketball player. (Some of these may have been already set when choosing the position.) In general, the video game will not let you create a basketball player who is amazing at all aspects of the game. For instance, a great three point shooter might be a terrible rebounder. Or the center who makes high percentage shots might be terrible at free throws. Often there is a yin and yang quality to the skill set. As you adjust one skill set higher, another one will go lower.

"Purchase" in the game or practice to obtain additional skills. Some games allow you to improve the video game characters which you have created. This can be done in a myriad of ways. Sometimes you can simply "buy" better skills by earning money for wins. Other times you can have your player practice or compete in skill competitions within the game. If the player does well, they will be awarded a higher skill level in certain area.

Tips & Warnings
Another way to get quality players on your team is to trade for them while in "season mode." You might have to trade two or three lessor players to gain a superior player, but it will pay off during game play.
Always be sure to properly save your game within the game system so that your newly created players are not erased while ejecting or shutting off the video game.
