Make a catamran out of paper.

Origami is an ancient art that originated in China in the first century, and spread to Japan in the sixth century. At first, due to the expensiveness of paper, it was an art that was practiced only by the rich. As paper became more available to all, then the practice of origami spread still further across the world. Origami is something that you can do with your students to create recognizable things from everyday life. One of these projects is making a catamaran out of paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the top right hand corner of the paper, line it up with the left hand side of the paper forming a triangle. Press it flat.

    • 2

Cut the paper that extends below the triangle, then open the paper and smooth it flat.

    • 3

Fold the paper in half, open it, and then fold it in half in the other direction.

    • 4

Fold the outer edge of the paper to the center line; then fold the other side to the center line. The resulting shape is a rectangle.

    • 5

Turn the paper sideways so that the rectangle length goes along the edge of the table. Grasp the edge on the right hand side. Fold the edge down until it touches the center and press down to make a crease. Unfold it, then repeat with the other side. You will be left with three creases on the bottom half of the paper that consist of a center fold and two on either side of the center line.

    • 6

Fold the left hand side of the paper in half width-wise. Grasp the paper at the first fold and fold the paper at an angle starting from the outer corner up to the first fold then flatten it to make a triangle do the same to the other side, then then fold both sides in the other direction to create an equilateral triangle (a triangle to form equal angles). Fold up the end in between the two outer folds to make the back end of the catamaran.

    • 7

Fold the section over beneath edge of the paper to make a triangle. Do the same with the other side form a triangle fold on both sides. Open the paper again. When you are finished, it will look as though a line runs diagonally from one corner to the other. Fold the paper in the direction making two other folds until you have equilateral triangles on the left as well.

    • 8

Pinch the center of the right hand up and do the same on the left. Open the folded side on the left so that it forms a mast.
