How to Make Your Own Mosaic Wall Hanging

Mosaics are images that are formed with china and glass shards or tiles of china and glass. The mosaic can be miniature in size as seen in jewelry making, or the mosaic can cover the inside walls of a temple. The images can be detailed and realistic or abstract in design. The shards can be as large or as small as you want. The simpler pieces can be easy and fun to do, requiring very little artistic skill.

Things You'll Need

  • Plywood, cut to desired size
  • Glass shards
  • China plates
  • Nippers
  • Towel
  • Hammer
  • Safety glasses
  • Tile cement
  • Grout
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Wet rag
  • Dry rag
  • Ruler
  • Ice pick
  • 2 screw eyes
  • Picture wire
  • Paper
  • Wrap a china plate in a towel. Hit it with a hammer so that you have smaller shards. Repeat until all the plates are broken into the desired sizes. Be certain that you wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.

  • Lay out the china and glass shards on a sheet of paper until you are satisfied with the design. If any of the shards need to be cut, use the nippers to clip them.

  • Take a shard from the center of your design that is laid out on paper and put tile cement on the bottom of the shard. Place it in the center of the plywood and cement it in place. Continue with the remaining shards in your design, working from the center out, until they are all cemented in place. Let the tile cement dry for 24 hours.

  • Mix the grout and water in a bucket, according to the directions on the box. Spread the wet grout over the top of the mosaic design. Wipe off the excess with a wet towel. Wipe the tiles clean with the dry cloth. Let the grout dry for 24 hours.

  • Turn the plywood with the right side down and measure five inches down from the top on the two edges that will be the left and right sides of your piece. With the point of an ice pick, make a small indentation on the plywood about 1/2 inch from the edge. Take the screw eye and place the point of it in this hole. Turn it clockwise until its rounded head is level with the board. Repeat with the second screw eye on the other side of the plywood.

Run one end of the wire through the first screw eye so that you have a 4-inch tail. Twist the wire and tail together to secure that end. Repeat with the second screw eye and the other end of the wire. Your mosaic wall hanging is now ready to hang.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding a frame to your piece will finish it nicely. Otherwise, if you wish, you can paint the four edges to hide the plywood.
  • This will be a very heavy piece, so be sure to use a heavy picture frame wire that can hold the weight. Use a screw in your wall to support the weight when you hang it. Handle the shards with care as they are sharp and can cut your fingers.
