How to Hang Up Firefly Lights

How to Hang Up Firefly Lights thumbnail
Fireflies light up the night sky by utilizing their ability to glow in order to attract a potential mate.

Fireflies give off a radiant, entertaining glow in the evening. You know they are present when differing shades of red, green and yellow illuminate against the darkness of the night. You can summon the blinking insects with firefly lights. These lights lure fireflies to a specific location because they mimic the behavior fireflies use to attract a mate. By giving off a faint glow, followed by periods of darkness, firefly lights will attract many different species of fireflies.

Instructions

    • 1

Take one of the nails and your hammer along with your garden trellis. Drive in one of the nails about 6 inches from the top of the trellis.

    • 2

Hammer another nail into place about 6 inches from the first nail. Continue placing and hammering nails 6 inches apart until you use all the nails.

    • 3

Hang the firefly lights on the nails placed inside the garden trellis. Most firefly lights come with loops or hooks, which allow you to hang them anywhere you desire.

    • 4

Turn on the firefly lights. Some types of firefly lights allow you to adjust the speed and the brightness of the lights. Adjust the lights to your desired setting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find a location near the windows of the house that allows you to see clearly out the window. Determine a good spot to hang firefly lights by knowing how much visibility you have. You want to be able to enjoy the show when the fireflies come to visit your home.

  • Attract fireflies by hanging firefly lights near moist damp areas that receive a lot of water. This is because fireflies are innately attracted to geographical areas where the moisture level is high. Do not place lights directly on top of water or areas that receive a lot of moisture. Instead, place the lights near one of these areas.

  • In order to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes, make sure you apply DEET-based repellents to your skin.

  • When you are not using the firefly lights, remove them from the trellis. Keeping them outdoors when it is cold and wet will damage the lights permanently.

  • There are over 2,000 different species of fireflies. Many different types of fireflies give off different colors of light and flicker differently from one another. In order to attract different species of fireflies, change the settings on your firefly lights.

  • Since male fireflies are most likely the fireflies patrolling the night sky, you may want to place the firefly lights about four feet off the ground to mimic the same behavior of females perching on bushes.
