How to Get Fossils in Heart Gold
The Pewter Museum is a reoccurring location in the "Pokemon" series, and in "HeartGold," it even offers a new service: fossil resurrection. By giving fossils to the aide at the museum, he can bring various pokemon back to life, adding them to your team. To get these fossils, you'll need to develop your team so that they're strong and skilled enough to voyage deep into the Ruins of Alph or Cliff Cave, dungeons that are available early in the game but which cannot be fully explored until your pokemon have been developed.

1
Put a pokemon with the ability to learn Rock Smash into your party. These pokemon include Diglett, Geodude, Graveler, Krabby, Kingler, Dunsparce and Shuckle. If you do not have one of these pokemon, the most easily captured is Diglett, who can be found in random battles along Route 48, in Vermillion City and in Diglett's Cave.
-
2
Go down Route 36 until your path is blocked by a giant tree. Speak with the man next to the tree to awaken HM06 Rock Smash in your pokemon.
-
-
3
Travel southwest of Violet City to reach the Ruins of Alph. Inside, you'll encounter puzzles, pokemon and boulders. It's the boulders you're looking for.
-
4
Approach a boulder and perform HM06 Rock Smash on them. There is a chance that you'll get a random item by destroying the boulder, including one of the game's several fossils.
-
5
Travel west of Cianwood City to reach the Cliff Cave. Performing Rock Smashes on the boulders here will also reveal fossils.
