How to Make No Sew Fleece Knot Blankets

How to Make No Sew Fleece Knot Blankets thumbnail
Fleece blankets are soft.

Snuggle up in one of these fleece no sew blankets that you can make in about an hour. They can be customized for gifts, and even young children can help make these blankets because there is no sewing involved. Choose wide fleece, which is available in a variety of colors and patterns in discount stores and fabric stores. You could even use two fleece blankets to make a larger tied fleece throw.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of fleece the desired size for your blanket. Lay out one of the pieces and cut away the selvage edges, if any. Selvages are the edges that are finished by the machine, and they are not like the edges the fabric store clerk cut. Make sure the sides are relatively straight, but don't worry if they're not perfectly even, because they don't need to be. Do this with each piece of material.

Place two fleece pieces wrong sides together on the cutting mat, with the edges matching up. If you can't tell the difference between the wrong side and the right side, it's probably a medium weight fleece, and it's okay. Using the rotary cutter and ruler, cut a three-inch by three-inch square from each corner. Set the corner pieces aside.

Make strips by cutting three inches deep into the fleece starting at the edge near a corner, and making the cuts at one-inch intervals. Cut all the way around the fleece, making these strips. Using a quilting ruler may help to hold the fleece still.

      Knot twice like this.

Grasp two strips that are on top of each other, one from each piece of fleece, and tie them in a knot high up, close to the edge of the blanket's body. Make the knot snug, but not excessively tight, and make it with two overhand crosses. Tie every other set of strips, all the way around the blanket.

Flip the blanket over, and tie the remaining strips. This keeps the knots balanced, and makes it so that there is no front or back to the blanket. If you use different colors or patterns of fleece, it makes your fleece knot blanket reversible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a sharp rotary cutter or scissors.

  • Fleece comes in different widths. Have it cut to different lengths for different sized blankets.

  • Experiment with strips of different lengths; just cut a larger square from each corner if you want to make longer fringe.

  • Different weights of fleece will produce different thicknesses of blankets.

  • You can make narrower strips, but pieces of the fringe might tear off if you make them too narrow.

  • Don't make long or narrow strips if the blanket is for an infant or toddler.
