How to Sell a Car in South Carolina
If you have a vehicle in South Carolina that you no longer wish to own, you do not have to trade it in on a brand new vehicle. Instead of taking your car to a local car dealership, you can sell the vehicle on your own. To sell the car yourself, you must advertise it and complete the sales paperwork yourself. In South Carolina, you need to complete a bill of sale when you sell a vehicle, as well as transfer ownership on the vehicle title.

1
Request a duplicate title, if you need one, by downloading and completing the duplicate title form from the South Carolina DMV Online website (see Resources). As of January 2011, the fee is $15. Submit the completed form to the address listed on it. You must have the vehicle title to be able to sell it.

2
Assess the value of your car by inputting the vehicle details and your South Carolina ZIP code on the NADA Guides website (see Resources). You can also see what similar vehicles are selling for locally by looking in the local newspaper for listings, or by looking at online listings. These methods can help you can determine the asking price.

Take photos of the car and include them, when you can, in ads to list the vehicle for sale. Put ads online on sites such as Cars.com, Craigslist and Cars Direct (see Resources). You can also list the vehicle in your local newspaper. Include a description of the car and contact information.

4
Complete a bill of sale and sign over the car title to the new owner once you have an interested buyer. You can create a bill of sale on your own or download a free one from the Cars Direct website (see Resources).

5
Remove your license plates from the vehicle, since they are registered to an owner and not a vehicle. Your buyer will need to secure his own license plates.
