1
Take diving lessons. Many Cancun dive tour companies do not cater to novices, although a few do. Taking a diving course prior to arriving in Cancun allows you to make the most of the facilities, including equipment hire. Courses usually last for three or four days, after which you gain Professional Association of Diving Instructors, PAD, certification, which enables you to dive anywhere in the world.

2
Travel to Cancun during off season, from June and November, to avoid crowds and too many tourists. Cancun's coastal waters rarely get cold, so a late holiday will not affect your experience. Gather a group of PADI-certified friends to accompany you or book individual diving excursions.

Tips & Warnings
Cancun's hurricane season is from May to December; however, travel to Cancun rarely is disrupted by a hurricane.
Take a qualified SCUBA instructor or guild with you when diving. Instructors and guides possess the necessary skills to assist other divers and know what to do in the event of a problem or emergency.
