How to Know If Windows Have Argon Gas in Them

How to Know If Windows Have Argon Gas in Them thumbnail
Argon gas is a reliable insulator for windows.

Argon is a clear, non-toxic and inexpensive gas that is used to fill the space between the panes of double-glazed windows as an insulating agent. The purpose of the argon gas is to block heat loss from the inside during cold months and prevent solar radiation from passing through the windows during the warmer months, thus minimizing convection currents and heat transfer. Check to see if your double pane windows already have argon gas before considering replacements.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the spacer between the panes of glass. All argon-filled windows must have a spacer to prevent the gas from leaking. Many companies use aluminum spacers, but the absence of an aluminum spacer does not necessarily mean you do not have argon gas-filled windows.

    • 2

Check for two small holes along the spacer, one where the argon entered the space and another where regular air was pushed out as the argon was installed.

    • 3

Check the window tag. The window tag is typically found along the bottom inside track of the window and should tell you the exact specifications.

    • 4

Check your original window work order for the argon gas specification.
