How to Track SSN Application Status

A Social Security number is required to work, open financial accounts, enroll in school and to participate in a multitude of activities in the United State. When a child is born in the U.S., the hospital files the necessary paperwork for the baby to receive a Social Security number. Legal immigrants or new U.S. citizens can also apply for a social security number. The application process can take a few weeks. If you would like to get a status on your application for a Social Security number, you can do so at any time.

Instructions

    • 1

Go back to the Social Security Administration office where you filed the original application.

    • 2

Present the representative with all documents and forms that you presented when you originally filed the application, such as a birth certificate, citizenship paperwork, passport or identification card.

    • 3

Inquire about the status of your application, and ask for your Social Security number. Even if you haven't received the actual card, your number may have been issued. If so, the representative will be able to look it up and give it to you. The office can also send your employer a notice once the number is assigned and another notice acknowledging that you filed for a Social Security number. There is no fee for these services.
