How to Obtain an International Passport in Nigeria
The Nigerian Immigration Service issues passports for all people who are Nigerian by citizen registration, birth or naturalization. Although several kinds are available, the standard passport is for international travel is valid initially for 5 years and all passports are renewed thereafter for 10 year periods. As of April 30, 2011, the newer Nigerian passport with an integrated circuit chip installed becomes mandatory; the older Machine Readable Passport (MRP) versions will no longer be accepted.

- Guarantor form
- Copy of guarantor's passport and national identity card or driver's license
- Passport photos (2)
- Identification letter
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate, if applicable
- Parent's letter of consent for minors under 16

Find a guarantor who will agree to pay for your repatriation, if necessary. Ensure the guarantor is a Nigerian citizen with a valid passport, driver's license or National Identity Card.

Access the e-Passport application form on the passport services page of the Nigeria Immigration Service's (NIS) website.

Choose one of several payment options. Follow the directions to make your payment. Copy the validation number generated after payment is complete.

Access the "Query your Application Payment Status" page on the NIS website. Fill in your validation number to find your record.

Print the passport guarantor's form and a receipt.

Schedule an interview on the NIS website. Have your validation number handy.

Gather the required paperwork, including the online printed application, acknowledgment slip, and payment confirmed receipt.

Obtain a copy of your guarantor's official guarantor form. Fill it in completely and have it verified before a government official such as a magistrate or commissioner for oaths.

Proceed to your scheduled interview at a passport office, embassy or high commission.

Tips & Warnings
If you miss your interview, you can reschedule on the NIS website.
Update or renew your passport by the April 30, 2011 deadline if you are still using the MRP version passport.
Be sure to obtain your receipt, if paying in person or print your receipt if paying online. Keep your validation number in a safe place.
