How to Identify Tonka Toys

How to Identify Tonka Toys thumbnail
According to Tonka, the company has produced over 250 million toy trucks.

The Mound Metalcraft Company began creating Tonka toys in 1947. In the 21st century, the trucks have become collector's items. Being made of metal to "withstand the toughest play," according to Tonka, the trucks from even the earliest days of production may be found in antique shops and estate auctions. Toy collectors recognize genuine Tonka toys using a variety of methods but primarily by gaining education about the company and its products.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the history of the company. Knowing something of the background helps collectors identify products. For instance, although many people know Tonka dump trucks, the company created only a crane and steam shovel during the first two years of production, and the Winnebago wasn't introduced until 1973.

    • 2

Look for the official Tonka decal on the side of the truck. It displays some variation on the basic company information: Tonka Toys, Mound Metalcraft, Mound, Minn.

    • 3

Find "TONKA" embossed into the metal. Many of the trucks are stamped on the tires, the grille and the tailgate.

    • 4

Check sources for the little details that will authenticate the toy. For example, the hubcaps on the 1954 to 1957 models contain five round holes while the prior models have no hubcaps.
