How to Learn Screen Printing

How to Learn Screen Printing thumbnail
Screen printing adds designs to shirts.

Screen printing is the process by which a designer applies designs to fabric, canvas, glass, posters, DVDs and many other surfaces. The designer sets the printable surface in a frame, and then uses a series of stencils to apply ink or paint, one color at a time. The final result is an object with any design that you can imagine. Many ways exist to learn this process. You should select the one that best fits your budget and learning style.

Enroll in a class. Many colleges, art schools and local organizations offer classes in screen printing. These classes are usually small in size and offer hands-on instruction, which has the benefit of providing immediate feedback or assistance. The instructor will be able to tell you where to purchase your materials, saving you time and effort. Enrollment costs will vary among organizations.

Read a book. Many books provide step-by-step instructions for screen printing. Ideally the book or books you select should have full illustrations of sample projects that let you follow along. Find these books at arts and crafts stores or at any major book retailer. It is important to check the publication year to have information about current techniques and materials.

Purchase a video. Videos on screen printing offer all of the same information as books, but have the added advantage of showing the process in motion. However, to see a technique again, you must rewind the video, but you can prop a book open to a certain page for as long as you want. It all depends on how you want to learn.

Surf the web. Many websites offer tutorials on screen printing. Websites offer text, pictures, videos and sometimes a combination of all three. Best of all, most website tutorials are free to view. Some are professionally made and very clear, while others are self-published. Surf wisely and gather information from many sites. If you see the same instructions over and over, you know they are the real deal.

Buy a kit. Basic screen printing kits include all of the basic supplies and equipment you will need to attempt the process. These kits often provide only inexpensive, basic supplies and an instructional booklet. If you learn best by simply jumping in, this may be the route for you. Be aware that you will make a lot of mistakes with a basic kit, but you will also have the opportunity to learn firsthand why you do some things and don't do others. For some, this education is far more valuable than the cost of a few wasted materials.
