How to Make Clothes From a Lace Tablecloth
If that lace tablecloth your Aunt Beth gave you for your birthday just doesn't go with you ultra-modern furniture you may want to find another use for it, like making it into a shawl or a shirt. Lace is a delicate fabric and can be made of thread or yarn and used for many purposes. According to Bobbi Brooks, "People don't use enough imagination when it comes to making clothes. There is nothing difficult about turning a nice lace tablecloth into a frock for a party as long as there is enough material. And if you don't like white, dye it pink."

1
Determine how much fabric you have to work with. Measure the tablecloth and calculate the number of yards.
-
2
Hang the lace tablecloth against a colored backdrop, such as a wall or door. Stand back and imagine what you can do with the fabric. Be creative, perhaps you can make a shawl with part of the table cloth and have enough lace left over to trim the bottom of a skirt.

3
Decide if you are going to buy a pattern, download one from the Internet or design one yourself.
-
4
Determine if you are going to have to line the fabric. If the tablecloth lace is see-through, for instance, and you are making a shirt, you might want to use a different colored materials to create an effect.
-
5
Pin the pattern on the lace tablecloth and cut very carefully. Leave half an inch as a seam allowance. If you are using something that requires two parts -- a pair of panties, for example -- use the first piece you cut as the pattern for the second for a better fit.
-
6
Pay attention when sewing. Because lace is a delicate fabric, it can be more difficult to work with than, say, cotton or polyester as it can "bunch up." You may want to hand-stitch, rather than using the sewing machine or use a lapped stitch.
-
7
Wear your new creation proudly. While everyone else at the party may have ordinary clothes, you will be wearing something unique.
