How to Heal a Broken Heart While Getting Over a Break Up or Divorce thumbnail
You can recover from a break up.

According to MedlinePlus, approximately half of all the marriages in the United States end in divorce. Breaking up can be difficult to deal with for both partners in the relationship. Even though you may feel a lot of pain, there are some things you can do to help heal your broken heart.

Instructions

    • 1

Do not be afraid to express your feelings. It is okay to feel angry, sad, guilty or scared. If you have to, let out a good cry, then do so. It may be painful, but keeping all those emotions bottled up inside you will only make it worse.

    • 2

Invite a friend or a family member over to your home and share what you are feeling. She may be able to offer you advice or relate to your situation. Surround yourself with positive people who care about you to take your mind off your break up or divorce.

    • 3

Join a support group or see a therapist if you are unable to talk about your feelings with a loved one. There are some people who may feel more comfortable opening up to a trained professional or to people who have gone through the same situation.

    • 4

Treat yourself. Buy yourself that new jacket you've been considering, or go get pampered at a salon. It's okay to indulge a little bit. Remind yourself that you deserve it.

    • 5

Join a health club or art class, or volunteer. These activities not only get you out of the house, but they allow you to meet new people and form relationships.

    • 6

Do not use food, alcohol or drugs to deal with your pain. These coping mechanisms will be destructive in the long run. Deal with your pain in healthier ways, such as going for a run or calling a friend to talk.
