Make your own prosthetic elf ears with liquid latex.

Prosthetic elf ears are a simple costume addition that you can place over your own ears to transform how they look. One easy way to make prosthetic elf ears is to use a spoon as the base for the ear and apply latex over it to create a hollow for the middle of the ear.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 medium-sized spoons
  • String
  • Hanger
  • Newspaper
  • Liquid latex
  • Talcum powder
  • Scissors
  • Spirit gum
  • Scar wax
  • Makeup foundation

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a string to the handle of each of the two spoons. Tie the string attached to the spoons around the bottom of a hanger. Place the spoons so they sit at opposite ends of the hanger to keep it level and to prevent the spoons from touching. Lay some newspaper under the spoons. Dip the bowl of the spoons halfway into liquid latex. Allow the latex to dry.

    • 2

Dip the spoons into the latex five more times, allowing the latex to dry between each dip. Dip a little less of the spoon into the latex each time so the end of the latex is the thickest point and the widest part of the spoon has the least latex.

    • 3

Sprinkle the elf ears with talcum powder once they are dry to prevent them from sticking to your fingers, ears or each other. Remove the latex tips from the ends of the spoons by gently peeling the latex away from the metal. Sprinkle the inside of the latex with the powder after you have removed it from the spoon.

    • 4

Slip the ears over the tips of your real ears. After seeing how they fit, trim the bottoms of the ears with scissors to adjust the way the ear tips sit over your real ears. Cut the bottom of the elf ears in a semi-circle shape to disguise the joint between the fake tip and the real ear.

    • 5

Apply spirit gum to the elf ear to stick it on your real ear. Blend the edges of the fake ear into your real ear with scar wax.

    • 6

Paint the ear with makeup foundation to color it a natural ear color. Use a reddish color on the inside of the ear and a paler color on the outside of the ear.
