How to Set Up a Wedding Tent

How to Set Up a Wedding Tent thumbnail
Setting up a tent on one's own can hold down wedding expenses.

Hold down the cost of an outdoor wedding by setting up your own wedding tent. The structure can be rented from a tent-supply company. Do this several months in advance so that you can recruit the help of friends or relations. Putting up a tent requires several people. Additionally, many local governments require a "tent permit" that can take up to four weeks to be approved. A wheelbarrow is handy for transporting the tent in its casing.

Instructions

    • 1

Wheel the tent in its casing to the setup location with the wheelbarrow. Remove the tent from the casing. Locate all the pieces, such as the poles and stakes. The canopy is the section that faces outside. Lay it out on the desired setup area with the canopy side up and the center of the tent positioned where it needs to be.

    • 2

Attach the side and center poles into designated slots. Different tent models have a variety of attachments, including spring-loaded clips that click into tabs in the poles. When attached, lift the center pole at one end. Have another person pick up the opposite end. Walk forward in an opposite direction from each other. This allows the tent canopy frame, which is like an accordion, to be pulled out.

    • 3

Ask the other person to hold up the tent while you push the ball tab on the tent's attached telescopic legs. Grab the bottom of the tent leg and move it downward to extend it. Repeat the process until the tent is upright.

    • 4

Hammer the stakes through the designated holes, located near the floor of the tent, into the ground. If windy weather is expected, use either attached tie-ins or tie lengths of rope through the holes and attach to large rocks. Place the rocks by the stakes. Ask your helper to press up against tent to simulate wind to ensure that all the poles and frame are secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before setting up the tent, mow the setup area and remove any debris, such as tree limbs or rocks.

  • Call the local utility company before setting up the tent to make sure no utility lines are located where the tent's 3-foot stakes will be driven.

  • Check that underground sprinklers are turned off during the event.
