How to Remove the Passenger-Side Air Bag on a 2001 Chevy Lumina
Chevrolet introduced the Lumina in 1990. You can remove the airbag from the passenger side of your 2001 Chevy Lumina right from home, saving yourself a trip to your mechanic. Airbag removal is dangerous business because the airbag at any time can accidentally deploy in your face, so extreme caution must be taken when removing it. To access the passenger's airbag you must first remove the glove box. You only need a few simple tools to complete this task and about 30 minutes of your time.

Pop up the hood of your Lumina and hold it up with the safety bar. Locate the negative battery cable and loosen the nut on top with an adjustable wrench. Slide the cable off of the terminal and set it aside. Don't let it touch the positive terminal. Wait about 10 minutes before proceeding.

Locate the fuse panel cover on the lower part of the driver's side dash and open it with your fingers. Find the airbag system fuse on the diagram located on the door panel. Remove the fuse pullers from the fuse panel and use them to remove the airbag fuse.

Open the glove box. Locate all the screws inside and remove them with the flathead screwdriver. Slide the glove box out and set it aside.

Remove the bolt holding the airbag to the vehicle using a wrench. Don't position your face and body in front of the airbag. Pull the airbag forward and unplug the cables behind it. Carefully slide the airbag out and set it aside away from reach of people and animals.

Tips & Warnings
When you remove an airbag from a vehicle, you are doing so at your own risk. It is very dangerous because the airbag can deploy in your face as you attempt to remove it.
