How to Do a 5th Grade Science Fair Project
To do a fifth-grade science project, you need to know what the standards are for fifth-grade science classes. Fifth graders study life sciences, earth sciences and physical sciences. You can experiment with plants for life sciences, stones for earth sciences and magnets for physical sciences.
Things You'll Need
- Grass seed
- 3 plastic cups
- Soil
- Semiprecious gemstones
- Precious gemstones
- Backyard stones
- Magnets
- Metal pieces
- Coins
Instructions

Life Science Project
-
1
Plant grass seeds in three different cups. Put one cup in a dark place and the other two in sunlight.
-
2
Water the plant in the dark and one of the plants in the sunlight every four days. Do not water the other plant that is in sunlight.
-
-
3
Document what happens to all three plants: one which has no access to sunlight but has water, one that has sunlight but no water and the control one that has both sunlight and water.
Earth Science Project
-
4
Collect as many gemstones as you can. You can buy them at museums or other stores that sell gemstones. You can also collect rocks from your backyard.
-
5
Classify each gemstone you collect as either precious, semiprecious, or organic. Precious stones are usually costly and have fewer minerals than semiprecious stones. Semiprecious stones are less costly and are easier to find. Organic stones are made from plant or animal parts.
-
6
Write a report on how you classified each stone. Display the stones as part of your science project. Challenge the judges to identify stones based on your discoveries.
Physical Science Project
-
7
Gather many magnets, coins and other pieces of metal. Make a chart listing the metals and magnets. Compare how magnets react to different metals and to each other.
-
8
Put the magnet on the coins and metal pieces. Use both sides of the magnet. Document your findings. Put the magnets together, flip sides and document how they react.
-
9
Display magnets, coins and metal pieces and invite judges to experiment with your project pieces to see how you came to your results.
