How to Use a Crochet Slip in Curtain Hooks

When making your own curtains one of the most difficult elements can be determining how to attach the simple panel to the curtain rods. Using a casing at the top of the curtain is unattractive and looks unfinished, leaving a curtain top that needs covered by a valance or other secondary window treatment. Covering small metal rings and curtain hooks in matching or coordinated crochet threads create curtain hooks that slip into attractive matching rings. The rings are sewn to the top of the curtain, and the hooks slide over the curtain rod creating a finished product with a modern appearance.

Instructions

  1. Crocheting Around a Ring

    • 1

Hold both the end of the thread and the ring between the thumb and forefinger of your left hand. Do not cut the yarn, but rather begin crocheting from the spool.

    • 2

Put the hook through the center of the ring, hook down and catch the yarn.

    • 3

Pull the hook back through the ring, pulling up a loop. The loop will remain on the hook.

    • 4

Push the hook back through the ring and pull up a second loop. Pull the loop through the loop already on the hook, forming a slip stitch and anchoring the thread to the ring.

    • 5

Reach through again and pull up another loop. Yarn over above the ring and pull the thread through the two loops on the hook to complete a single crochet.

    • 6

Single crochet around the ring, working from inside the ring. Go all the way around the ring compressing your stitches as you go. The completed ring should have compact stitches so that none of the ring is showing, but should not bunch or overlap.

    • 7

Cut a 1-1/2 inch tail and secure the last stitch with a finishing knot. A finish knot is created by pulling the tail through the final loop, still on the hook.

    • 8

Thread the loose end of the tail into the crochet needle and run the tail backward through the stitching to conceal it. Trim away any excess tail that is exposed after the needle is removed.

    • 9

Attach finished rings to the finished top edge of the curtain panels at equal increments. The spacing between the rings does not matter. Space them according to your design tastes.

    Curtain Hooks

    • 10

Hold the end of a curtain hook and the end of the thread together in your left hand and the hook in your right.

    • 11

Working around the hook, secure the thread on the hook with a slip stitch.

    • 12

Continue working around the hook with single crochet. Like the stitches on the ring, single crochet should be touching without bunching or overlapping.

    • 13

Tie off the end of the work with a finishing knot, and use the crochet needle to work the end back into the stitches.

    • 14

Put a small dot of craft glue on the first three and last three stitches at each end of the hook. This will keep the stitched from shifting and working off of the curtain hook.
