How to Bustle a Bridal Gown

How to Bustle a Bridal Gown thumbnail
Bustling a wedding dress is sometimes essential for ease of movement and to keep the gown clean.

There are three major types of bustles for wedding dresses: a regular bustle, an overbustle and an underbustle, also known as a French bustle. Regardless of which type of bustle your dress has, you can prepare to bustle your gown first with the help of the seamstress who will fit your bustle and then later with the help of your maid of honor on your big day. Prior to the wedding day, have a run-through with both the maid of honor and seamstress so you can practice bustling your dress as much as you need to. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Create a regular bustle by bringing the wedding dress train up underneath the dress so it looks like a bubble hem. This is useful when dealing with lots of organza or tulle.

Find an eye, hook or loop hidden by the seamstress in the fabric in the center of the skirt if the bustle is an overbustle. The train is hooked or buttoned onto it on top of the skirt. Bringing the bustle up from the sides as well as the back and buttoning or hooking it on both sides creates a more voluminous skirt. An overbustle is good for showing off detailing already on the back of the train, such as lace appliques, as you can still see the end of the train when the bustle is up.

Look for the loop or hook underneath the skirt if the bustle is a French or underbustle. Bring the train up underneath the skirt and hook or button it there. There are also possibly a couple of other hooks or loops farther up or down, which give the impression of layers lying on top of one another.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lots of organza and tulle probably does not suit the underbustle style and is instead more suited to a regular bustle.

  • Wash your hands before putting on and attempting to bustle your dress, and make sure your maid of honor does likewise.
